Donde SiempreWe started our Christmas tapas tour in Donde Siempre tavern (+00 34 622 422 647) in Cinegio Street num. 3, in “El Tubo”, the renowned area for eating tapas in Zaragoza. The special tapa they have prepared for this season is Christmas Turkey Delights; a succulent turkey sirloin with garlic, and mushrooms and raisins sauce that fills your palate of flavours. We were hungry and the tapas they had in their counter looked nice, of those which enter you through your eyes, so we eventually decided on an aubergine in tempura batter with parmesan cheese and romescu sauce (the speciality of the house) and a mushrooms, ham and green peppers open sandwich. They offer a wide range of tapas and portions and, although almost all of them are shown in the counter, they cook them instantly with fresh food in the kitchen. To drink, true to Somontano, two Danivm red crianza cups of wine. This was our first visit to the tavern but we will go back, for sure!

La RepublicanaThen we went to La Republicana (+00 34 976 396 509) in Méndez Núñez Street num. 38, a traditional restaurant where you can taste homemade food. They are always innovating and surprising their customers… Now with their Christmas tapa: Black Pudding Guirlache. It’s a funny imitation of a type of nougat, but this time it’s made of black pudding, eggs, almonds, aniseeds and hazelnuts. Just different! To put an end, two of the usual tapas to find here: Mudejar (au gratin rice with mushrooms) and chicken curry nest (chicken and apple).

We would have liked to eat one of their popular dishes, republican eggs, which they offer in two different versions: potato, fried egg, ham and tomato junket, sweet or spicy; or a big dish with the same ingredients. This time there were no junkets left and we thought the portion was too much to eat… But, if you have the chance, try them! Here you have the menu to get your juices flowing…

The only negative aspect was El Cocinero Arrepentido, a bar located in El Picarral neighbourhood which offered a very appetising tapa. But, to our surprise, when we got there and ordered the Christmas tapa, they didn’t know quite well what we were asking for. They said they didn’t have any Christmas tapa, although this restaurant appears in the official webpage as one of the participating establishments, with the description and photo of the tapa. We don’t know if they will be able to offer it to their clients in the following days…
